Few things can help you get immersed in the experience of playing a game as much as a gaming headset or headphones. In order to decide which are the best gaming headsets for PS4 we need to consider some features. How do you choose what is best for you? What features should you look for?

Whether you play multiplayer online games, single player experiences or both, a gaming headset will surely be, dare I say it? A game changer.

You will want to consider multiple aspects when choosing the best gaming headset for PS4, such as your budget, wired or wireless, comfort, quality and durability and of course! Does it look awesome? Let’s find out more.

Sennheiser GAME ZERO

HyperX Cloud Flight

Razer Thresher Stereo

PlayStation Platinum

SteelSeries Arctis 7

Wired or Wireless?

In almost all instances you will be choosing a wireless gaming headset as your set up likely has you gaming from your couch. For those who also game on a desktop PC, you might have the PS4 close by and can choose a wired gaming headset.

Durability and Quality

When buying a gaming headset for PS4, I always prefer to fall on the side of paying a bit more to get better quality and durability. It is worth it to invest in something that will last you several years of constant use for short and long gaming sessions.

Fit and comfort

This should be top priority when choosing a gaming headset for PS4 for obvious reasons. Whether you game for short or long sessions, you don’t want the headset crushing your head, reminding you it’s there. Likewise, there are headsets that come with fabric or leather ear cushions. I personally prefer fabric so that in some way my ears are ventilated. However, I’ve used the PlayStation Gold wireless headset which and the material used is quite comfortable and doesn’t get too hot.

In addition, the headset band should be fully adjustable and, if possible, padded for extra comfort. Finally, the headset should be lightweight to not cause headaches or neck pain after long gaming sessions.

Your Budget

Certainly, how much money you actually have that can be spent on the headset is of great importance. Like any kind of accessory out there, gaming related or not, there is a price range for gaming headsets going as low a $25 and is high as $400. I believe a very good price range is between $100 to $175.

Within this range you can find great quality and durability, awesome comfort and exceptional sound. At this range you will find that gaming headset manufacturers add cool extra features that enhance the sound and microphone experience of the headsets.

Gaming headsets come with a microphone for those sweet online multiplayer games. With the PS4 you can form parties and chat with friends that are not necessarily playing the same games as you.

Whether you’re doing co-op content with friends and chat away the hours while exploring different worlds or whether you’re playing PVP focused games, microphone clarity is of the utmost importance, in my opinion.

You will want to be understood clearly, you do not wish the microphone to pick up sounds coming from other directions and you want the connection to be uninterrupted during those heated moment to moment sections.

Many gaming headsets will have a noise canceling microphone to minimize ambient sounds mixing while you talk.

How does it look?

I am happy to say there is plenty to choose from out there when it comes to styles for gaming headsets. You will see many very nice-looking monochrome headsets with subtle colors that do not draw too much attention. You can also find gaming headsets with RGB lights that flash and pulse. Very cool looking!

I personally like blacks and whites on my controllers, headsets, my PC and my console as it gives them this nice premium looking feel. However, I am 100% on board with drawing all the attention by way of flashing and pulsating colors coming from my head!

Best Gaming Headsets for PS4

SteelSeries Arctis 7 (2019 Edition) – Wireless Gaming Headset

The SteelSeries Arctis 7 wireless gaming headset is one of the best gaming headsets available, hands down. This device has so many quality features and thought put into each one that help it stand at the same level, if not above, other amazing gaming headsets.

Let’s start with the included 2.4G low latency connection. A transmitter comes included with your headset that helps it connect with your PS4, PC or Mac. This transmitter allows for amazing sound quality and virtually zero interference.

The headset comes synced to the transmitter out of the box, but you can re-sync it easily if necessary. The Arctis 7 comes equipped with DTS Headphones:X v2.0 which provides incredible 360 degrees of audio.

The headset has 40mm drivers, a long range of 40 ft (thanks to the transmitter), and a very low impedance of 32 ohms. The retractable mic is lauded by reviewers as one of the best out there for its voice clarity and noise cancelling feature. The mic can easily be muted by pressing a button on the ear cup.

In the comfort department, the 2019 model has added extra foam to the ear cushions, enhancing the padding. The Arctis 7 headband has been redesigned to better accommodate folks with larger heads (like me) and provide better comfort overall.

The headset can be control completely from each of the ear cups, with sound controls on one side and microphone controls on the other side.

The headset enjoys a handy feature that allows you to balance in game sound and chat audio with a dial directly from on of the ear cups. The Arctis 7 boasts a 24-hour battery life and this will be subject to the volume level and mic usage.

The headset comes with a 3.5 mm cable which allows connection with your mobile devices and more importantly, your Nintendo Switch.

Sony PlayStation Platinum Wireless Headset

The Platinum headset boast an exceptional construction and comfort. As the headset was designed with the PS4 in mind, it has the same matte-black and polished plastic looks with some stainless-steel accents.

The ear cushions are very comfortable and the suspended headband is great for longer gaming sessions. The platinum wireless headset sports 50mm drivers which deliver incredible clear sound and deep bass.

The headset delivers impressive virtual 7.1 surround sound and the addition of the 3D audio mode, available for some PS4 games, enhances the experience to a whole new level. The integrated microphones on the headset offer noise cancelling but suffer a bit due to not being directly in front of your mouth.

The platinum headset wirelessly connects to your PS4 by a USB dongle (you can also wirelessly connect the headset to your PC/laptop in the same way) and connects to other mobile devices and the PlayStation VR headset with the included 3.5mm audio cable.

The game audio can be further enhanced with the PS4 companion app, available from the PS store, which allows you to download audio modes created by developers to bring out every little sound detail in their games.

Razer Thresher 7.1 – Wireless Gaming Headset

Razers sticks to what works with the Thresher 7.1 by keeping things simple. The headset is sold in different versions for different costs and this one works great for PC and PS4 by connecting wirelessly by way of a USB dongle.

The headset gets its name for obvious reasons as it offers 7.1 Dolby® Surround Sound with 50mm drivers for great positional audio and ambient sounds. The Thresher 7.1 has a retractable, unidirectional boom microphone that provides clear sound to your squad of friends.

The headset has integrated volume controls for sound and microphone in the form of two scroll wheels, one on each side. You only need to remember that your microphone is on your left for an easy way to know which wheel controls what.

The ear cushions are made of foam and leatherette and are quite comfortable, even after long gaming sessions. The ear cushions are glasses friendly as it comes with indentations on the foam cups that prevent pressure to your temple.

The Razer Thresher 7.1 was made with mid-tier competitive gaming in mind. Razer says the device can last up to 16 hours on a single charge. With its comfortable and soft memory foam ear cushions, its lightweight design at 408g / 0.89lbs and its great positional audio, makes the Thresher 7.1 a great all-round device that is worth your hard-earned money.

HyperX Cloud Flight – Wireless Gaming Headset

The HyperX Cloud Flight is an awesome headset and is great for competitive, cooperative and casual gaming. It was designed with PC, PS4 and PS4 Pro in mind. The device connects wirelessly through a USB adapter, and I am happy to report the connection is perfect. The Headset can also connect through a 3.5mm cable to other devices like the Xbox One, your Nintendo Switch and various mobile devices.

Be aware the microphone is disabled when connected this way. One of the first things that will jump at you is its up to 30 hours battery life, perfect for long gaming sessions and fewer interruptions for charging the device.

The device features red LED lights that can be configured in different ways and doing so helps you achieve longer battery life. Of course, setting the LED lights to off will result in the longest sessions between battery charges.

The HyperX Cloud Flight is impressive in the comfort and durability department. The headset uses soft memory foam and leatherette to conform to the shape of your head and ears and with the long battery life HyperX wanted to make sure you would stay very comfortable.

If you’re looking to take breaks in between sessions, the headset has rotating ear cups that allow the headset to be comfortably worn around the neck. This device is exceptionally durable and lightweight, withstanding numerous and long gaming sessions. Certainly, it comes down to treating any device you own, including your gaming headsets, with care.

This gaming headset is up to industry standards when it comes to sound with large 50mm drivers. The device provides very rich and clear sound quality. It boasts an enhanced bass that elevates the experience and puts the headset alongside the very best in this guide.

I mentioned at the beginning the HyperX Cloud Flight is great for competitive and cooperative gaming. The headset is TeamSpeak and Discord certified which speaks to the quality of your voice as its heard by other people.

The microphone can detach itself and has noise cancelling capabilities. Audio and Microphone controls are on the headset for easy adjustment and it has cool audible cues when doing so. I highly recommend the HyperX Cloud Flight headset due to its laser focus on microphone, sound, durability and comfort.

Sennheiser GAME ZERO Gaming Headset – Wired

Not to be confused with the G4ME ZERO version released a few years ago, the Sennheiser GAME ZERO wired Gaming Headset is an incredible update to Sennheiser’s line-up. The most significant improvement is the impedance reduction from 150 ohms to 50 ohms, making it work without the need of an amplifier with your PC and consoles.

The headset comes with exchangeable cables to connect to your PS4, PC and mobile devices (you do need an adapter for the Xbox One). Sennheiser has always been one of the brand names that come up when discussing sound and microphone quality and it shows in this headset by delivering clear and balanced sound and voice audio.

Aside from that, the headset enjoys incredibly comfortable ear cups, made with memory foam ear pads and leatherette. The cups turn 90 degrees for easy storage but more importantly for giving some rest for your ears and the sides of your head after long gaming sessions.

Sennheiser claims to have a professional grade microphone on this headset and I think they largely achieved this claim. The headset’s microphone offers very clear communications with its noise cancelling feature and is easily muted by pulling it up.

A small downside is that due to the closed back design, sometimes you may not hear yourself talking which might be a bit strange feeling while chatting with friends. Like the other headsets in this guide, overall, this is a great headset to purchase and you will not be disappointed.

Final thoughts

I truly believe a very good gaming headset will take your gaming experience to the next level. It is a must buy accessory for those who can afford it. If you play single player games and you like getting immersed in the story, the dialogues, the ambient sounds, the visuals, the background music, then this is must have.

Likewise, if you play online multiplayer games you need that directional and positional sound to alert you to incoming threats. Easily chat with friends immersed yourself in the experience by taking in all the sounds. Get your hands on a Gaming headset for PS4.
